Larch Park takes an ecologically-sound approach to storm water. For a start, the neighbourhood conserves permeable ground by reducing driveway and road widths and eliminating sidewalks on one side of the street. There is more room for carbon-absorbing plants, and less use of petroleum and aggregate resources.

We encourage rain barrels for each home, and rain cisterns in the multifamily buildings. Not only will this reduce storm water runoff, it becomes an easy way to water a garden.

The storm water containment pond is equally thoughtful, designed to eventually become a natural habitat. Edmonton’s Bedrock Seed Bank will source the many plants from local areas to ensure they flourish in Central Alberta’s unique climate and soil conditions.

There will be real Alberta grass – the rough fescue of the Northern prairie – together with aspen stands and indigenous shrubs. To allow succession to take place, the landscape around the pond will feature all the species necessary to promote ecosystem succession. This will ensure beautiful, natural flowers, shrubs, trees and grasses in this part of Larch Park for decades to come.
